Product Type Description

Devices

  • A/V Receiver - Amplifies sound from a multitude of possible audio sources as well as route video signals to your TV from various sources.
  • Audio System - System to reproduce sound from different kind of audio sources.
  • Camera - Device that records/stores images. These images may be still photographs or moving images such as videos or movies.
  • Display - Output device for presentation of visual and audio information.
  • DVD/Blu-ray Player (optical disk player) - Device that plays discs produced under both the DVD-Video and Blu-ray and other optical technical standards.
  • Embedded Media Server - Personal computer or NAS (Network Attached Storage) or other device containing networked storage for the home, dedicated for storing various digital media (meaning digital videos/movies, audio/music, and picture files).
  • Ethernet Switch - Computer networking device that connects network segments and networked devices. A switch connects 2 individual ports together rather than sharing a common bus (as a network hub).
  • Gaming Console - Interactive entertainment computer or modified computer system that produces an audio and video display signal which can be used with a display device (a television, monitor, etc.) to display a video game.
  • Home Automation Product - Product that automates housework, household device (e.g. lights, HVAC, etc.) or household activity in the home.
  • Home Gateway - Home networking device, used as a gateway to connect devices in the home to the Internet or other WAN (wide area network).
  • Media Player - Used for playing back multimedia files. Most media players support an array of media formats, including both audio and video files.
  • Network Hub - Device for connecting multiple twisted pair or fiber optic Ethernet devices together and making them act as a single network segment (a network hub commonly has a shared bus (as opposed to a network switch)).
  • PC/Notebook/Netbook - Any general-purpose computer whose size, capabilities makes it useful for individuals, and which is intended to be operated directly by an end-user with no intervening computer operator.
  • Phone - Telecommunications device that transmits and receives sound, most commonly the human voice. Telephones are a point-to-point communication system whose most basic function is to allow two people separated by large distances to talk to each other.

  • Projector (Beamer) - Device that receives a video signal and projects the corresponding image on a projection screen using a lens system.
  • Remote Control - Component of an electronics device, most commonly a television set or media player, used for operating the device wirelessly from a short distance. Historically, a remote control is an infrared device that communicates in one direction with a single device. However, within UPnP, a Control Point would commonly be used to implement a remote control and could control multiple devices and systems. A UPnP Control Point is a two-way device that can get information from UPnP devices as well as send controls to them.
  • Router - Device that forwards data packets across computer networks. Routers perform the data "traffic direction" functions on the Internet.
  • Set-top Box - Device that connects to a television and an external source of signal, turning the signal into content which is then displayed on the television screen or other display device.
  • Software Application (e.g. software stacks) - Computer software designed to help the user to perform singular or multiple related specific tasks.
  • Storage - File-level computer data storage connected to a computer network providing data access to heterogeneous clients.
  • Tablet - Name of a range of mobile Internet appliances that focus on Internet and media features. Internet Tablets fall in the range between a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) and an Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC).
  • Television (includes tuner) - Telecommunication medium for transmitting and receiving moving images that can be monochromatic (shades of grey) or multicolored. Images are usually accompanied by sound.
